When the father of a wounded soldier Lance Corporal Steven Schultz first asked builder Dan Wallrath if he would remodel their two-story home for more accessibility, Dan’s knee jerk response was that his company only built new custom homes. However, a father’s heart is not easily dissuaded. He talked with Dan about his son’s injuries and their home’s inaccessibility for someone with Steven’s physical challenges. A few photos and emotion-filled minutes later, Dan knew he had to do something to help. “I took this to the Bay Area Builder’s Association Board of Directors and immediately everyone got really excited about it. All the suppliers and subs, everybody said ‘yes, let’s do it.’ No one hesitated,” notes Dan.

The year was 2005 and that project marked the beginning of what Dan describes as “the incredible opportunity” to give these men back their lives. (see the full story in June/July 2007 issue of The Builders Journal)

"Our nation’s troops make tremendous sacrifices every day to ensure our safety and freedoms. In return, these brave men and women, and their families, deserve the best care and support we have to offer. I salute the Bay Area Builders Association, which is doing excellent work through its Support Our Troops program to help our wounded service members returning from fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the world. Members volunteer their time, energy, materials, and financial support to contribute to the construction of new homes for wounded veterans, to help them deal with new challenges as they transition back to a normal life. I had the privilege of participating last year in a presentation of a custom-built home to a young veteran and his family on behalf of the Bay Area Builders Association, and it is good to see that spirit of support continues today."

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn

"The Bay Area Builders Association understands that the home is the heart of American life. And they know the values that are fundamental to it – faith and family – are protected only because of the courageous men and women of our armed services. Many of these soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our way of life. Others have been so injured defending our freedoms that they’re not able to enjoy the comforts of their own homes when they return from the battlefield. But through the remarkable charity and generosity of the Bay Area Builders Association, these brave soldiers and their families have greater accessibility to their homes. The Bay Area Builders Associations and the family, friends, and organizations who work together with them deserve our highest praise. Their efforts reflect the very best of American values."

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison

“Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines lay their lives on the line to protect our freedoms, defend democracy and keep us safe in our homes. When they are injured on our behalf, it is fitting that their communities band together in providing them homes of their own. Whether through renovations that remove obstacles to a new disability or the gift of an entire home, members of the Bay Area Builders Association have shown the depth of their character by helping our wounded warriors rebuild their lives. I encourage communities across Texas and throughout our nation to follow their example of honoring those who have sacrificed in the preservation of our cherished freedoms.”

Gov. Rick Perry

"The Bay Area Builders Association are American BloodBrothers of the highest order. Always ready, willing, able and enthused when it comes time to help our great American military hero warriors in time of need, I am proud to work hand in hand with these outstanding, generous, caring families in showing our deepest appreciation for the incredible sacrifices made by our troops."
